Born and raised in Kailua, O‘ahu, Dr. Kawika Analu Mortensen, M.D. is the Research Associate for the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence (NHCOE). Dr. Mortensen graduated high school from Kamehameha Schools–Kapalama campus in 2001, received his Bachelors of Science in Biology with a concentration in Philosophy from Gonzaga University in 2005, and subsequently earned his Doctorate degree in Medicine from UH’s John A. Burns School of Medicine in 2011. After residency training in Surgical and Anatomical Pathology at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Dr. Mortensen joined the teaching staff at the center where he has been able to focus on his true passion of mentoring students and working on the development of educational pipeline initiatives aimed at improving the health and wellness of his lāhui. Dr. Mortensen’s commitment to community service is carried out through his active involvement in ‘Ahahui o nā Kauka (The Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians) as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the non-profit ‘Ahahui Mālama i ka Lokahi, co-curators and stewards of the historical, ecological, and cultural preservation of Kawainui Marsh in Kailua, O‘ahu.
