ʻO ke kumu, ʻo ka māna, hoʻopuka ʻia—The teacher, the pupil, let it come forth
The Department of Native Hawaiian Health contributes to diversity of the health care workforce in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific through our Medical and Health Science Education Division initiatives. The ʻImi Hoʻōla Post-Baccalaureate Program and the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence are key pipeline programs that provide essential opportunities to promote success of Native Hawaiian, underrepresented and/or disadvantaged students who demonstrate the potential to become future health care professionals. Together with community and educational partners, we serve as the lead unit for cultural competency training, teach community health and clinical electives, and facilitate service-learning experiences for JABSOM medical students. Our faculty are dedicated to guiding and mentoring students, residents, and junior faculty whose individual achievements ultimately enhance the learning environment for all students and results in improved health for our communities.
