Dee-Ann Leialoha Carpenter, M.D. is an Associate Professor with our Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). In the past, she has served as the Associate Chair of the Clinical Teaching and Patient Care Services Division of Native Hawaiian Health and led in the development of our primary care clinic called Lau Ola. Under her stewardship, Lau Ola grew to include behavioral health services and clinical pharmacology consults and served as the training grounds for medical and pharmacology students and residents. She will be helping to expand the primary care practice of our faculty practice group, University Health Partners of Hawaiʻi, by moving her practice over to the Queen’s Medical Center in a partnership with JABSOM’s Department of Medicine. In addition to her excellent clinical work, Dr. Carpenter has been teaching medical students and residents since graduating from JABSOM in 1993. She works on the team that teaches cultural competency to all first and second year JABSOM medical students and coordinates a 4th year elective in Native Hawaiian Health; Since 2007, she’s worked weekly with the Papakōlea community to do health screenings for Na Lomilomi o Papakōlea (Hawaiian massage) and is very active in community health screenings multiple times during the year. She is the immediate past-president and a present board member on the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, and is also a board member of the ‘Ahahui o Na Kauka (Native Hawaiian Physician Association) and the Friends of ʻImi Hoʻōla. She has done multiple presentations locally, nationally and internationally. She was most fortunate to have been a recent Medical Officer on the Hikianalia, the escort canoe of the Hokuleʻa on the Malama Honua voyage. She believes that if we can improve the health of Native Hawaiians, we can improve the health of all of the people of Hawaiʻi.
