Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, she is thankful for her excellent public school teachers and her loving family who guided her on her path. At college in Boston, Massachusetts, she received a B.A. in Sociology and focused on Social justice in health. She attended medical school at John A. Burns School of Medicine and completed Pediatric residency training at Kapiolani Medical Center and Kokua Kalihi Valley (KKV) community health clinic. In 2010, Dr. Sasha Fernandes was honored to join the NHCOE ʻOhana. She is the lead faculty for the NHCOE program, Native Hawaiian Student Pathway to Medicine (NHSPM) that guides Native Hawaiians on their path to becoming doctors and health professionals who are dedicated to increasing the wellbeing for the Native Hawaiian community. Dr. Fernandes also worked on the Native Hawaiian Interdisciplinary Health (NHIH) program, a collaborative project between NHCOE and Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work. She also enjoyed teaching her Public Health course “Cultural Competency in Healthcare” at UH-Manoa that focuses on Social Justice health issues. Dr. Fernandes loves her work inspiring youth and college students to pursue a calling to uplift the health and wellness of our communities.
